The Legendary Ms. Moffet’s Brownies

This recipe has been passed down through generations and it’s truly my favorite dessert of all time. The texture is thick and fudgy but nothing like your average brownie.
These brownies belong to my great-grandmother’s best friend Ms. Moffet. From what I know about her, she was an amazing woman and and equally amazing baker. Apparently these brownies divided a whole congregation and caused a lot of controversy for simply being Ms. Moffet’s secret.
The truth is, ultimately, that this brownie recipe actually comes from the back of the Hershey’s Chocolate Syrup cans from the 1950’s. She just chose to not let people know about that. What a queen.
What sends this over the edge is the luscious chocolate boiled icing that gets poured over the hot cake. Let it chill in the fridge before slicing for optimal results.
Bake Time: 40 minutes
Yield: One 9x9 Square Baking Pan
Ingredients:
For the Brownies
1 stick of Salted Butter, softened
1 cup of white granulated sugar
1 cup of all-purpose flour
4 whole eggs
16 oz. of Hershey’s Syrup
2 teaspoons of Vanilla Extract
A pinch of salt
For the chocolate boiled icing:
1 stick of butter (you can use unsalted here)
1 cup of sugar
1/3 cup of evaporated milk
2 teaspoons of vanilla
Pinch of salt
1 cup of semi-sweet chocolate (chips or bar)
Preheat the oven to 350°.
Spray a 9x9 square baking dish and set aside. If you use a glass baking dish, the brownies will bake faster. Be sure to adjust Baking time if using glass instead of aluminum
Add butter, sugar, flour, and eggs to a large bowl. Beat all the ingredients together. There will probably be small pieces of butter visible throughout the batter, which is a good thing!
Add chocolate syrup, vanilla, and salt. Mix well.
Pour into the prepared baking dish. Bake the brownies until the top of it is just set and feels slightly firm. This usually takes exactly 40 minutes, but some ovens are different . You can do a toothpick test as well, but I always go by how it feels when you tap the top,
In the last few minutes of baking, prepare the boiled icing:
Place a sauce pan over medium low heat. Add in butter, sugar, evaporated milk, vanilla, and salt. Let the mixture come to a boil and only allow it to boil for 1 minute. Turn off the heat and add the chocolate chips, stirring well until they melt.
Once you pull the brownies out of the oven, pour the boiled icing over the hot cake. Allow the icing to set for an hour before slicing.
This one is special to me and I think you’ll really love them. Enjoy! ❤️
